Enjoying Myselfby Nick Bosch on 10/17/2012
It’s been a long time since I went sprinting through the woods behind my parent’s house with my little blonde head barely appearing above the pricker bushes that lined the way. My mom remembers those days well I’m sure.
Those were the days when I’d come in through our basement door to the unfinished cement floors because I was too dirty to enter the house anywhere else. Of course, I didn’t always follow instructions. Sometimes I’d come through the front door and bring my mess with me straight onto our beige carpet. My parents replaced it recently. All those times I didn’t listen had moved the carpet from beige to that grey color of wear.
I’d catch some lip sometimes but not always. I think my exhilarated smile from being off on an adventure was too much for my mom or dad to be upset with. That rising frustration in their voices would crash into their smile matching mine.
I was a little adventurer. A cute kid that was content with the simple things and always knew how to entertain myself. I knew how to have fun by myself, not in that perverse way that some of you may have just thought of, but in that genuine way of enjoying the time I had.
Today I remembered how important that is, to do those things which you enjoy. The ability to enjoy yourself.
That’s what life should be about, bringing more of those things that we enjoy (in joy) into our lives. We should bring more of those things into our lives that allow that to happen and erase those things that prevent it.
I imagine for most of us this may require more money. Take a look at your career, your business, your bank account and see what you can do to get more of it. Or at the very least, what you can do to reallocate it.
But it all starts with enjoying yourself. I am.
